Name one important fact about the US Dept. of the Interior. If you said, "It just found itself in the center of controversy for restoring the original name of Alaska's Mount McKinley" — well, you wouldn't be wrong.

But we think there's something even more interesting than the new name of the tallest mountain in North America.

So stop thinking about Denali (the name the mountain was originally known by Alaska Natives before it was renamed to honor US President William McKinley). And start thinking about Drupal.

Conquering Content Mountains

Just a few weeks ago, the Interior Department revealed its shiny new website — powered by open source Drupal.

It marks the first time a federal agency has implemented the Drupal distribution OpenPublic for its CMS platform. Developed in partnership Fig Leaf Software, a digital agency, and Phase2 Technology, the site is hosted on IBM’s SoftLayer cloud.

The new website acts as a single landing page for all public information related to Interior's services, as well as the agency's 70,000 plus employees across nine technical bureaus.

In partnership with Fig Leaf Software, Phase2 will be working over the coming months to consolidate the CMSs at each of those nine DOI-related sites onto a single agency-wide platform.

As the Cabinet-level agency responsible for managing America’s vast natural and cultural resources, the Department of Interior was faced with the cost and complexity of managing hundreds of websites across a large Federal enterprise, Phase2 noted. DOI now has a department-wide, consolidated Drupal platform.

Big news from Composite this month.

Montreal-based Orckestra, a provider of cloud-based multichannel commerce solutions, just bought the company.

Orckestra plans to integrate the Composite C1 content management system (CMS) with its Commerce Orchestration Cloud to enhance the personalized e-commerce and in-store shopping experiences it provides to mid-to-large retailers, grocers and branded manufacturers.

"We are very excited," Composite CEO Oskar Philip Lauritzen told CMSWire.

Lauritzen reassured C1 clients that Orckestra will continue to support the C1 open-source offering.

"In addition to integrating C1 in Orckestra’s software offering, we will continue to offer our free open source CMS as a stand alone product with the commercial extensions and services we have offered so far. With the ongoing integration of the combined power of our two companies, however, we will have far more to offer in going forward," he said.

With that in mind, Composite users can now turn MVC controllers and actions into Composite C1 functions. This can be done either by decorating MVC controllers and actions with attributes or via an API, where you pass references to your controllers/actions. 

"The latter is nice if the MVC code is either 'hands off' or you just want the MVC code 100 percent pure. The attribute approach is nice if you like the MVC pattern and want to do custom development with it in C1," explained Aleksandra Kharchyshyna, community manager for Composite.

Get ready ... get set ... Enonic XP version 6.0 is about to launch.

Enonic XP is now aligned with the idea of a Web Operating System, meaning that applications are packaged and installed as self-contained objects, conceptually inspired by iOS and Android. "Applications can all access core platform functionality, but also provide their own extension points. An application can be just about anything, from a full fledged corporate website with self-service to a Google Analytics Integration that can be wired into the previous mentioned site," said Enonic CTO Thomas Sigdestad.

The new release includes a better user interface, improved support for small screens, a new publishing wizard and an improved editing UI with collapsible panels and back-office-view of the page structure for faster editing of large pages.

The Hippo team is counting down the days for Hippo.Connect, which they boast is shaping up to be a who’s who of digital marketing and IT experts. Hippo.Connect Boston is the community's first US event, which it plans to host at the Aeronaut Brewing Company.

But that's not all, explained Joanna Madej, Hippo's head of global communications.

"We hosted last year’s Hippo GetTogether at the devastatingly trendy Club Trouw —  a converted newspaper printing press in east Amsterdam. Since Hippo.Connect Amsterdam is our biggest event to date, combining the Hippo GetTogether, User Groups and Partner events, we’re kicking it up a notch this year: hosting our event at Amsterdam’s hippest venue, the Westergas Fabriek," she said.

EMC’s Enterprise Content Division CTO Jeroen van Rotterdam will be speaking in both Boston and Amsterdam, and Content Marketing guru Robert Rose will be speaking in Boston.

In other news, Hippo is partnering with Branding Automation Solution Bynder to provide clients with a more integrated digital experience.

The integration will streamline content marketing related processes, allowing for a more consistent and cohesive brand experience across all channels. It will let businesses leverage the Hippo’s omnichannel WCM and content performance capabilities with best-of-breed branding automation from Bynder.

“A WCM should be a strategic partner in creating a contextually relevant experience throughout the customer journey, from the first-time visitor to the loyal fan,” said Hippo CMO Tjeerd Brenninkmeijer.

Joomla is now in double digits: it celebrated it’s 10th birthday last month. “Joomla! began on August 17, 2005 when a group of 17 young fools from across the globe took a big, bold step,” the team told CMSWire.

“Ten years later, we are a community with over 200 user groups across the globe. We work together as a 100 percent volunteer effort of thousands of tireless contributors. And all this as friends who can achieve amazing things together.”

Brian Teeman, one of the original 17 founding members of Joomla, created a website in tribute to Joomla’s 10 Year Birthday. 

The tribute website cites the coders and writers that have contributed to the project over 10 years, and a timeline history of the Joomla project. It also links to resources such as a map of Joomladay events, and link to Joomla training videos.

In other news, Open Source Matters invites interested and suitably experienced Training Companies to submit proposals for the purpose of creating the first training center. This Request for Proposals is intended to outline the type of training Open Source Matters would like to provide free of charge for the Joomla! community.

The Joomla! Production Leadership Team (PLT) added new members on the Joomla 4 User Experience Team (JUX).

The purpose of the JUX is to improve the usability of the Joomla project through extensive research and user testing, and to make recommendations to the relevant teams based on  findings.

The team at Liferay is busy preparing for its biggest annual event of the year, Liferay Symposium, taking place in Chicago Nov. 16 and 17. Some of the topics on the agenda include digital business, mobile strategy and collaboration.

Get a peek into what's planned for Liferay 7, the next version of the flagship Liferay platform, in the recently announced last milestone release (details in Liferay 7 Milestone 7 blog from Liferay's VP of Engineering). This release showcases a first version of the modern, clean default look and feel that will be included in Liferay 7 as well as new product and control menus designed for greater versatility and flexibility.

Liferay is developing a new JSR (Java Specification Request) called JSR 329: Portlet 3.0 Bridge for JavaServer Faces 2.2. The JCP (Java Community Process) Executive Committee approved the ballot in early August and Neil Griffin, project lead for Liferay Faces, will be representing Liferay as the chair of the expert group. 

Liferay will be attending HealthIMPACT Midwest in Chicago on Sept. 17, a one-day, hype-free conference on connected and coordinated health care technologies to deliver value to patients and the health system. Team members are also attending Digital Customer Experience Strategies Summit in Chicago on Sept. 23 and 24. The latest release includes new translation bundle modules, which consist solely of translation files for several other Magnolia modules in a given language. Each language has its own translation bundle.

The new modules decouple the lifecycle of translations from the lifecycle of Magnolia and its modules, in addition to enabling an easier workflow for translators and developers. 5.4.1 also offers increased multisite functionality.

This month, Magnolia is co-exhibiting with IBM at dmexco conference Sept. 16 and 17 in Cologne. The event attracts more than 30,000 visitors from 100 countries.

There’ll also be an evening tech meet up in the Netherlands Sept. 22. Magnolia and its partner, Tricode, will show participants how AngularJS and Bootstrap work and how they can be integrated into Magnolia. You can register here.
