Not So Dim

Salesforce's push into the enterprise collaboration space continues as it pays out over US$ 30 million for Dimdim, a company offering real-time IM communications and desktop sharing/conferencing in the cloud. For existing Dimdim customers, the service continues to run as normal while it is integrated into Salesforce's systems.

Dimdim originally allowed up to 20 users to collaborate for free, a trend unlikely to continue in the Salesforce regime. It offered a Web and Flash-based meeting application for communicating via video, audio or text, and collaboration through whiteboards. It will give Salesforce a little extra in its competition against the likes of Cisco's WebEx.

The announcement press release mentions Facebook a whopping eight times, highlighting just how close Salesforce intends to align its business-focused social platform with the popular social site. It also drags up the horrible term "Cloud 2" which is a shame as most companies are only just getting to grips with Cloud 1.

A Brighter Future

The Dimdim product will be integrated into Salesforce's Chatter platform which offers collaboration tools in the cloud to Salesforce's army of over 60,000 customers. By offering integrated collaboration and communications, Salesforce is aiming for even greater Chatter adoption.

What will happen to Dimdim's open source codebase is a question not answered by the press release, and for those still looking for a free service, there is always Zimbra's open source edition or you could try Eseri's Hosted Software for Teams.

This purchase comes hot on the heels of Salesforce snapping up cloud platform app-creation serivce Heroku back in December for US$ 212 million.
