Last year, WoodWing Software (news, site) -- provider of print, online and tablet publisher solutions -- capitalized on the popularity of the iPad. Last fall, they released a software update that allowed publishers to design for a variety of tablet interfaces, beyond the iPad. This week they’ve gone another step by offering enhancements to its multi-screen functionality as well as an Android Reader App for the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Android Reader Apps
With the Android Reader App, which was developed and tested for the Samsung Galaxy Tab, publishers can develop their own publications via efficient workflows, allowing them freedom and flexibility. Woodwing says an Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) Reader App will be released as soon as Android 3.0 becomes available.
Multi-Screen Support, HTML5 Widgets
Developing publications for multiple devices is simplified thanks to new features of WoodWing’s Enterprise publishing system. Enhancements include multi-screen support, which helps create content across devices with different screen sizes, resolutions and aspect ratios, using one InDesign layout. Woodwing’s Content Station has also been extended to support the multi-screen functionality, enabling publishers to preview and export digital magazine pages for various devices.
Woodwing has also integrated HTML5 widgets into the creative workflow, making it easier to add elements such as banner ads and Google maps. Widgets featured include, 360 Viewer, Progressive Image Zoom, Filmstrip Viewer, Image Reveal and HTML Container.
iPad Reader App Updates
Woodwing is using this release to offer Version 1.7 of its Reader App for the iPad. It allows for progressive downloads, which lets users start reading their magazine or newspaper while the rest of the content is downloaded in the background; and a bookmarking feature, which allows users to save and bookmark articles for getting to their favorite content.
As we enter the next generation of tablet publishing, we can expect to benefit from these and future enhancements, intended to make publishing across tablet devices easier and more dynamic.
