SpringCM 5.4 Offers Automated Records Management CapabilitiesSpringCM (news, site) has brought out a new version of its SaaS based enterprise content management system today, adding features and functionality designed to support records management and make the lives of application developers a little bit easier.

One of the biggest compliants about enterprise content management systems today is that they are too complex to understand and use. SpringCM's cloud based offering tries to ease the complexity concerns. Especially with the latest release of their enterprise CMS.

Automated Records Management

Version 5.4 of SpringCM takes records management automation a few steps further with several new capabilities:

  • Set the retention period of a document using a date field inside the document itself
  • Automatic classification through a SpringCM Advanced Workflow or a document rule

Custom Reporting and Dashboards

SpringCM version 5.3 introduced the concept of custom dashboards, allowing a SpringCM custom report to be displayed as part of a dashboard. The latest version takes reporting and dashboards two steps further with more out of the box reports and more options for dashboard customization including:

  • More layout options
  • Tabbed dashboards
  • Role based dashboards

Plug and Play Application Design

SpringCM is a platform that allows organizations to design and deploy custom applications that use enterprise content management capabilities at their core. The core SpringCM functions are ingestion, document management, workflow and output.

You can then design and deploy your own ECM applications by accessing these core services through web services, email and fax, web client and other approaches.

SpringCM has beefed up the application design capabilities in this latest version. Previously you could clone an application template to be used for different departments or customers. Now you can go even further by cloning an SpringCM Object (i.e. workflow, report, metadata model), adding that object to another application.

Recognition from the Analysts

Traditionally, enterprise content management has been provided as an on premise solution only. With the increasing rise of cloud based services and the desire for SaaS based content services, vendors like SpringCM are getting noticed more and more.

In Forrester's report, The Forrester Wave Enterprise Content Management Suites Q4, SpringCM is noted, along with Xythos and Hyland are noted as a growing force in the market for content services offered as Software as a Service.

In Gartner's latest Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Content Management, they get even more attention being the only SaaS based ECM vendor to make the list (and for the first time). Calling them the "early trendsetter", Gartner lists SpringCM in the Visionaries quadrant, saying "horizontal and vertical composite content applications listed among SpringCM's departmental and industry solutions represent those in greatest demand from business buyers of on-premises versions."

Gartner also notes their investments in both their platform and their brand have been paying off. They do caution however, that traction for SaaS ECM is still limited and that SpringCM may see increased competition from leading vendors.
