This week, Microsoft offered us a new definition of pulling speed when it took Office for Mac SP2 off the shelves, SharePoint and DotNetNuke get close, SpringCM joins the mobile party, Perceptive also gets mobile with Interact and Adobe releases CS6/Extended.

Office for Mac SP2 Pulled

Some things are short-lived. Then there’s SP 2 for Office for Mac. According to the Office Mac blog, it has been pulled after only being released on April 12 -- a mere week on the shelves.

The blog says that the majority of customers have been delighted with the improvements -- new features and performance -- but that a small percentage were experiencing difficulties with the update, related to the Outlook for Mac database.

Our goal is provide the simplest update experience for everyone -- so we have temporarily stopped pushing out the SP2 update through Microsoft AutoUpdate while we investigate the issue,” the blog says.

However, the blog adds that customers are still able to obtain the SP2 update via the Microsoft downloads site.

We encourage you to either wait for the AutoUpdate, or follow the directions in the above blog post before manually updating to ensure you don’t experience issues. We will provide an update once we have more information to share,” the blog adds.

However, it hasn’t said when it will restore SP2 to the automatic upgrade channel and has given no indication as to what it is going to do with it.

This is not the first time Microsoft has pulled things. In February 2010, it stopped serving a security update to Windows XP PCs, and two years earlier it pulled an update for Vista that busted systems with annoying reboots. However, this “pull” has to be the quickest yet for a product that is only a little more than a year old. Let’s see where it goes.

DotNexNuke Upgrades SharePoint Connection

DotNetNuke this week also announced the immediate availability of a new SharePoint connector that now supports both SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint 2010.

The new SharePoint Connector, part of the DotNetNuke Enterprise Edition, integrates document management with the  DotNetNuke web content management solution.

The result is that enterprises will be able to efficiently and securely publish documents from SharePoint to their externally-facing websites.

SpringCM Goes Mobile

Also over the past week, cloud document and content management vendor SpringCM introduced new mobile apps for iPad, iPhone and Android, allowing business people to securely share content and work together anytime, anywhere, from virtually any mobile device.

Using the new SpringCM Mobile apps, users can efficiently complete tasks and drive processes with mobile business content. Features of SpringCM Mobile include:

  • Effective document collaboration -- Share files with a link, native file and PDFs of documents
  • Document approval and status update
  • Business document management -- Have access to prior versions so you can compare or reference

Perceptive Launches Interact

Data capture and content management vendor Perceptive has also gone mobile, this time with the launch of the Interact Mobile product family that gives mobile device users access to information and participate in business processes in the Perceptive system.

With Interact Mobile, users can participate and initiate business processes, view and interact with associated content.

Interact Mobile for iPad offers high-resolution document viewing and process interaction via the device’s native Multi-Touch interface and supports the currently released version of ImageNow 6.6. Interact Mobile for Android is slated to be released with ImageNow 6.7 this summer.

Adobe Releases CS6, CS6 Extended

Finally this week, Adobe has released CS6 and Photoshop CS6 Extended. As might be expected, it comes with dozens of new features and enhancements, which are too numerous to go into here.

Photoshop CS6 Extended integrates the editing, compositing, and graphic design capabilities of Photoshop CS6, as well as advanced tools for 3D design, image and video editing and quantitative analysis needs of the graphic design, video, Web, architecture, medical, manufacturing and engineering industries.

Adobe says that since Photoshop CS6 was released as a public beta on March 22 for Mac OS and windows platforms, there have been nearly one million downloads of the software worldwide --surpassing any public beta in Adobe’s history.

With this launch, Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CS6 Extended can be purchased as standalone applications, key components of the Adobe Creative Suite 6 family and now as part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud.
